Essay
1. Besides punishing the South and protecting African-Americans, what other considerations might have motivated the Radical Republicans in their Reconstruction efforts?

2. After the Reconstruction period, the Fourteenth Amendment became crucial to the development of American business. Explain what role this Civil War amendment might have played in the growth of corporate America.

3. What might be the reasons that Southern whites were able to reestablish racial supremacy in the years during and after Reconstruction?


You may use the book in class and the Internet. Write out your answers on a piece of paper and turn them into the substitute teacher. Also you need to turn in your rough draft to the sub.

Compare Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant as men and as military leaders.

Lincoln and Davis had to make many of the same kinds of decisions during the Civil War. For instance, each had to choose capable leaders. What other decisions did both men face? Evaluate the overall effectiveness of each leader

Discuss Abraham Lincoln’s position on the emancipation of slaves at the beginning of the Civil War and again in 1863.
